Posted on: Sunday, May 6th, 2012 at 8:21am

Hello COLS Alumni!

Every year COLS selects two people who are in their last year of high school who will be attending a post-secondary institution to receive the Eileen Krieger Memorial Scholarship.

Eileen attended COLS as a grade ten ambassador from Ridegeway- Crystal Beach S.S. in 1997 and was chosen to attend the World’s Conference in Washington. When she returned home from the World Congress Conference she exclaimed, “I discovered the world really isn’t that big and one person can make a difference”. Eileen lived by that quote.

On Monday January 20, 2003 while on her way to a job interview the car she was riding in lost control on ice on 401 and hit a tow truck which was helping two other cars who had lost control of their cars moments before. Eileen was killed instantly.

This scholarship was made in her honour and is given to two people who embody her traits.

This year applications for the award will be accepted until midnight on May 15, 2012 by e-mail or postmarked no later than midnight, May 11, 2012.

The scholarships will be announced at the three day seminar. In order to receive the cash award you must be able to show proof of post secondary acceptance.

This doesn’t need to be done before you apply for the scholarship of $750.00.

Here is what's in the news for January

The very essence of leadership is its purpose. And the purpose of leadership is to accomplish a task. That is what leadership does–and what it does is more important than what it is or how it works.

PLAY-Day

HHAA’s PLAY-Day on November 25, 2010 was a huge success! Both guest speakers were OUTSTANDING; many of the surveys at the end mentioned the guest speakers as their favourite part of the day. A solid number of people attended. The ice cream game was a big hit as usual (both in terms of fun and morals). There was a ton of PMA!

During the day, our theme of change & diversity was discussed and talked about important issues and stereotypes.

There was great food, no problems with allergies, quantity, and taste!

What they learned for next time was time management and connecting games to real life discussions and topics.

COLS Alumni of the Month

Michael Noseworthy is our alumni of the month for COLS. He's 16 and a Senior PLAY-Day Coordinator for HHAA. What has Michael done for COLS & why did HHAA nominate him:

This year COLS HHAA consists of a fairly balanced executive committee, varying evenly between returning and new members. With the experience and PMA of our executive, we thought the first PLAY-Day would be accomplished without much concern. However, as many of us learned (or re-learned), this was not such an easy task. Many complications concerning deadlines, communication and finances were met during our preparation stages, and Michael stepped up to the plate every time. Recently acquiring the position of Senior Play-Day Coordinator, he was given tremendous responsibility: creating the itinerary, writing/sending out/receiving forms, preparing booklets; but he got through all of it, contributing hugely to our successes in our first PLAY day. He regularly comes to all the meetings and events and that is why HHAA has nominated to recognize our group this month.

Does your club have someone who has done a whole pile of work? Should they get recognition for it?

Did you meet someone in COLS that’s made a major difference to their club, or your life? Do you want them to be recognized for it?

Send an e-mail to Joelle or Ann Marie with your nominations any time of the month so we can recognize the hard work everyone puts into their clubs! You can e-mail us at coaa@cols.ca.

Leadership is understanding people and involving them to help you do a job. That takes all of the good characteristics, like integrity, dedication of purpose, selflessness, knowledge, skill, implacability, as well as determination not to accept failure.?
