Everyone belongs at COLS.

We believe socioeconomic status should never be a barrier, and neither should disability. This page explains how we've built this website to be accessible, and how to reach us if something gets in your way.

      Our standard

      We aim for this website to conform to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1, Level AA, and we work towards WCAG 2.2 AA wherever we can. WCAG 2.0 AA is the level required by the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).

      We test pages with automated tools and by hand: with a keyboard, with zoomed text and at phone sizes.

      What we've built in

      • Keyboard friendly

        Every link, button, menu and filter works with a keyboard, with a clearly visible focus outline and a “Skip to main content” link.

      • Motion you control

        Animations switch off if your device asks for reduced motion, and anyone can pause them with the “Pause animations” button in the footer.

      • Readable colour contrast

        Text and controls are designed to meet WCAG AA contrast ratios, including text on coloured backgrounds.

      • Works at any size

        Pages reflow down to 320px wide and stay usable when text is zoomed to 200%.

      • Clear structure

        Headings, landmarks, labelled forms and descriptive link text help screen reader users find their way.

      • Described images

        Meaningful photos have text alternatives; purely decorative images are hidden from assistive technology.

      Known limitations

      Some things we link to are run by other organizations and may not meet the same standard:

      • our online donation form and clothing store, which are hosted by third-party payment services;
      • social media platforms such as Instagram, Facebook and YouTube;
      • some older news posts and documents, which may have images without descriptions.

      If you can't use any of these, contact us and we'll help another way, for example by taking a donation or registration by phone or email.

      Feedback & accessible formats

      Need information from this site in another format, such as large print, plain text or a phone conversation? Found something hard to use? Please tell us. We welcome all feedback and will work with you to find a solution.

      • Send us a message through our contact form (mention accessibility so it reaches the right person)
